Day 3: Searching for Lions

I thought I might not be able to get the blog up today. There are winds in Thornybush and the internet keeps going really slow or dropping out. It took over an hour to upload today's photos 😱.

I'm starting this entry with a map of the whole trip. The place with all of the houses is Thornybush and Shimungwe is at the south end (to the left of Tangala Lodge). We are here for 4 nights.  Next we go to Sabi Sands (bottom of map) for 4 nights, and finally to the Timbavati region (top of map) for 6 nights. You can see that all of these places are fairly close to Kruger Park.

So yesterday afternoon we spend our game drive looking for lions that we never found. It still was an amazing trip watching our ranger and tracker work--walking deep into the bush with no weapons.

We did see some cool birds and giraffe.  This is a Cape Glossy Starling.

The lighting for our sundowner drinks was beautiful. The Klein Drakensberg Mountains were shining a pale blue in the sunset.

For our morning game drive we were greeted by a herd of giraffe as the sun rose.

We spent about an hour driving north up the Thornybush Reserve to see a leopard who had caught a Nyala and dragged it up a tree to eat. By the time we got there he was stuffed and was snoozing in the grass. A very handsome sleeper.

On the way back to the lodge we saw lots of animals.  After a herd of impala, we came upon a small herd of female kudus. This was the first time we've seen them this trip.

Then, to our utter amazement, our tracker and ranger spotted two male lions snoozing in the grass.  There were fairly strong winds this morning and lots of animals were hunkered down to get out of the wind. These brothers were so cute!  We finally found lions! Yay!

We also drove by a white rhino who was snoozing and our vehicle caused him to stand up to see what was making so much noise.

And then there were more giraffes. We probably saw more than 20 today. Wonderful!

Thanks to Peggy for the kudu and lion photos.
